Description:
It was almost closing time, the café was almost empty, when the barman put his right hand on the bar and asked: 'Mr. Schouten, how is Lulu?'
“That's an unexpected question in an unexpected place,” I said.
Lulu is my youngest daughter. Three years ago she disappeared from my life and from her sister's. On our birthdays she sends a card, posted in Antwerp or Amsterdam, without further address.
I never talked about personal things with Steve, the bartender. 'I haven't seen Lulu in three years,' I said.
This is how 'Lulu's back in town' begins, one of the eight interlocking stories in the moving family chronicle Self-portrait with mother. How did it get to this point that Martin Schouten's daughter no longer wanted to know anything about her family? And what possessed her sister to go into hiding and return as the wife of a Turk who said he would murder her entire family?
Never before has a book by Martin Schouten been so personal. He not only searches for his daughters, but also for his own ancestors. In it, an illiterate church leader appears, a farmer who can tell a great story about a Dutch settlement in America and a woman who has been beaten by life and who is honored in the story `Self-portrait with mother'.
