Description:
October 2017. The narrator and her son take a short trip to the West Bank and Jerusalem. On their first evening in Bethlehem, they meet Aladdin in a souvenir shop. He acts as if he was expecting them and offers to be their guide. Thanks to him, they get to know the everyday life of the Palestinians. Even though the friendship with Aladdin may not be what it seems, once they get home, they still miss his shop.
October 2018. The narrator lights the magic lamp that illuminates what is forever unattainable: houses from the past, houses in Syria, of new friends. The contact with Aladdin may have faded, but wandering thoughts still find their resting place in that small souvenir shop in Bethlehem. Even what may never have existed or cannot exist can be loved. And so fervently that it still becomes animated and comes to life.
Wonderlamp is an intimate tribute – not to unfulfilled or even broken desires, but to the human talent to desire. Abundant, naive and foolish. Against the facts.
