Description:
The world is silent. That is why people speak. Because everything is lost in the end. That is why people collect: things, photos, memories. A fight against the tide that the main characters in Bernlef's stories fight heroically and persistently.
Sometimes it is about personal pasts that must be protected from being forgotten, other times about the manipulated past of dictatorships, as in the second part of this collection, against which the individual sets up his own truth. In the title story, two pasts merge in an ironic way: the archives of a secret service provide a spying writer with the material for his memoirs.
Everything passes, but that passing is recorded by Bernlef in a chronicle-like, seemingly laconic manner, in a style in which compassion and astonished emotion resound. For Bernlef, silence is silver but writing is gold. And gold is rarely on the surface, the writer hastens to add.
