Description:
Elisabeth Eybers (Transvaal 1915) has lived in Amsterdam since 1961, where she has continued to write poetry in Dutch. In 1978 her work was awarded the Constantijn Huygens Prize and in 1991 the PC Hooft Prize.

Like Elisabeth Eybers' previous collections, Winter-surplus contains 'verse' in her native language, Afrikaans, and 'verse' in English, her mother tongue. And just like there, we are left to guess what is the original and what is the translation - or can you not speak of that with a bilingual poet? In any case, we notice in the process that even poetry that is simple at first sight gains when it is illuminated from two sides; now the irony becomes bitter with nastiness, then again the humor softens the pain.

Guus Middag in NRC Handelsblad about Verbruikersverse/Consumer's verse: 'I do not believe that this kind of bitter humor is merely a game or fun - rather a character trait. The impressive thing about Eybers' poetry, and certainly about her old age poetry, is her persistence in an attitude: that of someone who wants to keep holding herself up to the light, who only trusts every feeling when it has been approached from the other side. Honest and ruthless, almost the attitude of someone who wants to cut into his own flesh, also out of curiosity.
