Description:
Marta Wijk and Reinier Moorslag, once lovers, go on holiday together after recent disappointments in their personal lives. However, they are stranded in a Northern French village due to car trouble, where the poor population seeks oblivion in a surrogate cider brewed from ash leaves. During their forced stay, Marta and Reinier come to terms with their feelings for each other and the consequences of their relationship. Just as the thunderstorm that comes and goes every day in the summer heat has to break out at some point, so Marta and Reinier will have to accept the consequences of their insight. Hella S. Haasse: `The emotional climate in which Marta and Reinier experience their relationship is strongly influenced by the political tensions of the Cold War, the mutual distrust and the prejudices of that period.
