Description:
No Russian tsar is as famous as Peter the Great.
Who doesn't know that he built ships in Zaandam 300 years ago? Less well known is that the inquisitive tsar went to see Amsterdammers' cabinets of curiosities with anatomical preparations, stuffed birds, insects, shells, utensils from distant peoples and works of art. No wonder that Peter bought the first large collections for his new art room in St. Petersburg in Amsterdam.
Recent research has shown that a great deal of the Tsar's purchases and associated correspondence has been preserved.
Tsar Peter the Great and his Amsterdam friends describes the stay of the tsar in the Netherlands and his friends and art treasures in particular. It offers a unique picture of the times!
Jozien Driessen is a historian and guest curator at the Amsterdam Historical Museum. She has written several books.
