Description:
It is dark. Only the spot where the fire was is dimly lit. Daniel is still awake. The only one, judging by all the snoring. Every time he closes his eyes, Saartje haunts his mind. He feels her teasingly pressing her doll against his cheek. 'Give Jet a kiss.' He hears her say it. Then he hears father: 'You promised, you promised.' Daniel turns around. The chain rattles. Where is Saartje? Is she still alive? 1664. Eleven-year-old Daniel lives in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Amsterdam when the plague breaks out. Within a few weeks, Daniel has lost everyone he loves, except Saartje, his sister. But no one knows where she is. He leaves Amsterdam to look for her and heads to Haarlem. In vain. Saartje is nowhere to be found. He does come across a gang of outcasts led by a devilish man. From that moment on, the chance of finding his sister seems smaller than ever. Fortunately, Daniel also meets new friends. And when he finally tracks down Saartje, help comes from an unexpected corner. An exciting and compelling story about a turbulent era. This book was awarded a Vlag en Wimpel!
