Description:
Maddie Addison returns to her family's traditional summer vacation home after eleven years away. All these years, she has tried to avoid her wealthy, eccentric, and impossible relatives. With her mother not long to live, the family gathers in the dilapidated house for one last time. Among them are Maddie's impeccable sister Dana, theatrical cousin Sedgie, childhood sweetheart Derek, and the inscrutable Adele. Maddie is reunited with the ghosts of her past—her difficult mother, painful memories, and an unprocessed death—but also discovers a comforting secret. She discovers that she has more in common with this boisterous, eccentric, and temperamental family than she ever imagined. At the end of a wondrous summer, Maddie has a home to call her own.
Van goeden huize is a heartwarming story about family, a house full of history and secrets, about the tragedy of love and life. But also a subtle portrait of a woman searching for her place in life. Gamble's sharp eye and fresh tone are reminiscent of Anne Tyler, her ironic descriptions of family relationships of Woody Allen, and her sensitive tone of Janet Fitcli.
