Description:
Brothers Ron and Cor grow up in Osdorp in the eighties and nineties of the twentieth century. In an environment of new construction, shopping malls and video stores, they each search for their identity. Ron is the fast, handy boy; he gets the girls and sings at parties and gatherings. Cor is the seeker; uncertain in love and full of doubts about his future.
In West, different periods of their lives are described. Gradually, the brothers discover that their characters cannot be reconciled. And then they are confronted with each other once again in a harsh way.
In sparse prose, in which every word is accurate, Walter van den Berg evokes a desolate, oppressive atmosphere. West is a poignant novel about a stubborn search for love. And an impressive second book by a great talent.
Walter van den Berg made his debut in 2004 with the novel De hondenkoning, which was received with praise in both the Netherlands and Flanders. He has published in De Gids, Bunker Hill, Bright and Rails, among others. He also contributed to the anthologies Magazijn, Zomerse steden and Sub Urban.
`The great quality of this debut is the dry, emotionless and therefore catchy style. De Morgen
`The readers who end each year by reading a chapter from The Evenings every day should try The Dog King for a change. Trouw
`We have no hesitation in naming The Dog King as the most impressive debut of 2004 Esquire
