Description:
The poetry in Viewmaster, Co Woudsma's first collection, is strongly visual. At one point the poet shows his daily surroundings, at another he offers a view of, for example, Madurodam, Ontario or Easter Island. The poems are pictures with depth, in which one looks inwards and outwards. Melancholy and humour are rarely absent; under the clear images contained in elegant sentences the reader often perceives a principled pessimism.
Nature versus culture, eat or be eaten, love and procreation and the omnipresent transience - the themes in this collection seem classical at first sight, Co Woudsma addresses them in a completely unique way. Just as Viewmaster is also very idiosyncratic in verse: the poet masters the sonnet, free verse, and 'everything in between'.
Co Woudsma (1960) has lived in Weesp since his birth. He studied art history. His poems have previously appeared in De Revisor, De Tweede Ronde, Maatstaf and Hollands Maandblad.
