Description:
In 1978 and 1979 the first parts of Frédéric Bastet's 'Wandelingen door de oude wereld' appeared. At the presentation of the PC Hooftprijs in 2005, which he partly owes to these popular scientific articles on classical archaeology, they were reprinted in one volume.
Frédéric Bastet: 'Almost all of us are interested in our distant past in one way or another: the archaeology of the Holy Land, Crete, Troy, Athens, the immense Roman Empire, Byzantium. In all these areas, there is much to experience through new discoveries and methods. But those who want to know more often come across difficult to access specialist literature, laboriously collected from nooks and crannies and sometimes written in a difficult language. There is not much that can be done about that, but something can be done. I hope that the readers of these essays will find inspiration in them to continue on their own journey: either by physically travelling to Paestum or Palmyra, or that the notes at the back will encourage further self-study and research in an easy chair. Or by visiting a museum.'
