Description:
Kavafis is the greatest Greek poet after Antiquity, he is the greatest figure from the multicultural melting pot of Alexandria, he is one of the first to give homosexuality as a theme all the space it needs, and he is the creator of a completely new kind of poetry, a poetry that is close to prose and yet overshadows almost all formal poetry. His influence on twentieth-century poetry is great; contemporary poets such as Tomas Tanströmer and Toon Tellegen would certainly have written differently without him. Hagar Peeters is also one of the enthusiasts, as is evident from the enthusiastic introduction she wrote to her personal anthology of Kavafis' poems.
