Description:
Carolyn Slaughter grew up in a British protectorate (present-day Botswana). In Veiled Time she takes the reader to the heart of Africa. As a six-year-old girl she sought refuge in this overwhelming and desolate landscape of the Kalahari desert. She was surrounded by nature that radiated such grandeur and power that she could not take her eyes off it. In one night an enormous river could suddenly appear, attracting groups of flamingos and herds of game animals. And termite mounds could grow as high as trees. Rarely has the beauty of Africa been written about in such an impressive way.
'This book is about my childhood in a very special part of Africa, the Kalahari Desert. It is about our family's life in an exceptionally beautiful country. (...) What happened to me affected all of us - my mother and father and my two sisters and me: we were all destroyed by it because it was so horrible, and we all tried to pretend that nothing had happened. Each of us developed our own strategies for survival and got through it alone. On the surface we were exactly what we appeared to be: an ordinary English family living in a very remote part of Africa.' This is how Carolyn Slaughter begins her book.
