Description:
The idea for Albertina Soepboer's new collection arose while traveling through the new and often chaotic Europe.
Zone is about borders: old and new borders between north and south, between man and woman and between then and now. Zone is also about violence: whoever draws or breaks borders, seems unable to escape it.
The poems form the story of a traveler with a suitcase full of history, which always seems to catch up with her. The journey takes her through ancient Rome, the far North and along the Berlin Wall.
Ghost towns like New York and Baghdad loom. The traveler moves on and sometimes ends up in her own zone, the place between all places. A place where history doesn't matter.
In the background of the poems, music, telephone and e-mail resonate. Language and perspective shift constantly in the collection, where the chaos of time often dominates. And ultimately, Zone is about love. Not as a victory over that chaos, but as a warm capital letter in the middle of it.
