Description:
Avram looks at her seriously and urgently. 'I'm boating,' he says. 'Saturday.' He takes a note from his pocket. First he smooths it carefully and then he hands it to her.
All Lisa's other thoughts disappear as she reads. There is only one sentence, in clumsy letters.
'Take care of my sister.'

1905. Lisa has only just moved to Rotterdam when she meets Avram and Hanna, two of the thousands of Romanian Jews who flee to America via Rotterdam. Hanna is ill and has to stay behind when the rest of her family leaves for New York, on a ship of the Holland America Line.
Avram asks Lisa if she wants to take care of Hanna. And especially: if she can make sure that Hanna comes to America too. Will Lisa succeed? Or will Hanna never see her parents again?
