Inspiration for both churchgoers and non-churchgoers

In 1962, priest-poet Huub Oosterhuis began translating the psalms, initially together with writer and poet Michel van der Plas and exegete Pius Drijvers. Their ideal: the psalms should also be poetic and singable in Dutch. In this translation, the God of the psalms is 'friend for life'. Almost fifty years later, the time has come: all 150 psalms have been translated by Oosterhuis and appear in this festive, beautifully designed edition!

A selection of 75 psalms was previously published in Halverwege (2008), on the occasion of Oosterhuis' 75th birthday. Pius Drijvers wrote about it: `Magnificent texts. You feel that he has been working with the psalms all his life and feels exactly what they want to say. These arrangements come very close in contemporary language and images.

Huub Oosterhuis (1933) wrote numerous poetry collections, essays and liturgical texts. He is the founder and director of `De nieuwe liefde, centre for debate, reflection and poetry in Amsterdam, which was opened by the queen in early February 2011.
