Description:
As the mayor of the capital, Eberhard van der Laan is known and loved throughout the Netherlands. In contrast to his predecessors, however, he does not have the image of a typical PvdA mayor at all. He mainly positions himself
as a pragmatic administrator, with a focus on 'law & order'.
Who is this man, who is embraced by both left and right? In this biography, journalist Kemal Rijken sketches Van der Laan's youth in the Reformed Rijnsburg, with parents who were in the resistance, and where everyone knows him as the son of the doctor. After studying law in Amsterdam, he becomes a political assistant to the illustrious alderman Jan Schaefer, enters the city council and starts a successful law practice.
The mayoralty is described from the inside: Van der Laan's reputation within the Stopera, the relatively smooth start after his period as minister and his handling of recent dossiers such as the abdication or the Amsterdam morals case surrounding Robert M. Rijken reveal how Van der Laan's career has shaped him and prepared him for his current position, which seems tailor-made for him.
