Description:
Beyond the Borders of the American Empire is the result of two years of travel by Robert Kaplan with the American army, along the coast of Africa and Indonesia, across the Pacific Ocean, to Iraq, Thailand and South Korea. As an exception, he was given access to certain ships, submarines and planes. Flying in a B-2 bomber, living aboard a nuclear submarine, on a mission with a Stryker brigade: these boyhood dreams are the daily practice of the American land, sea and air forces all over the world.

Kaplan spoke to soldiers of all ranks and is able to tell their stories in their words and from their perspective. In this way, he not only vividly portrays the army culture, but you also empathize with the men and women who are actually fighting the war on terror.

“This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how this military functions in the 21st century.” – The New York Times

“Few writers could tell this story better…[Kaplan’s] narrative style is sharp and polished. He takes his reader into the minds of the soldiers.” – Chicago Tribune

Robert Kaplan is one of the best-known and most influential American journalists of our time. He is a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, and a 'senior fellow' of the New America Foundation. His previous works published by Uitgeverij het Spectrum are On the Borders of the American Empire, The End of America, Balkan Shadows, Eastward, Military Politics and Soldiers of God.
