Description:

A brilliant, committed novel about 'ordinary people'

Leroy, a young soldier, has returned wounded from the Iraq war and has been living in a rehabilitation center for years. After a failed suicide attempt, he ends up in the hospital. His nurse Pauline and the night watchman Freddie are, besides his mother, his only visitors, and a fragile but wonderful friendship develops between them.

The lives of three wounded souls are movingly intertwined: Pauline, who is always busy helping others, Freddie, who after his wife and children is now also in danger of losing his house, and Leroy, whose only clear memories are those of his ex-girlfriend. Vlautin exposes the sore points of modern American society in an equally brilliant and heartbreaking way. But above all, in Vrij he sketches the broken lives of people who remain hopeful despite everything.

'In simple language, but also with meandering sentences, Vlautin describes small moments of a little more humanity.' Vrij Nederland
