Description:
A simple journey, just from Budapest to Vienna. And from one moment to the next, everything that ultimately had to be different, is as before, as always.
From one moment to the next, the narrator of Imre Kertész's 'Story', who is of course none other than Imre Kertész himself, finds himself once again exposed to the terror organised from above during the Second World War that tyrannized him for the rest of his life, and which made him - this is the year 1991 - terribly assume that he was once again face to face with death or that he was going to be deported to Auschwitz.
In comparison, the experiences of the narrator in Péter Esterhazy's story, who is of course none other than Péter Esterhazy himself, can almost be called cheerful. He makes the same journey from Budapest to Austria. He has had pain in his back for days, 'not severe, not unbearable, but incessant'. The question is, however, whether despair is measurable.
