Description:
'The Wild West' is a compact chronicle that begins at the end of 2000 and ends after the elections of 2003, with of course 'the revolutionary year 2002' as its focal point. All kinds of big and small complications pass by in 'the Wild West'. The political murder. The national trauma. The uprising of the citizens. The marriage. The apparent restoration. But also: the death of a pop star and cuddly junkie. The cakewalk of the PVdA. Literature on TV. Good and bad sex according to the new Dutch etiquette. The bullet letter as national Valentine's card. The noble kitsch of the country's most popular cabaret artist. The restoration of the political china shop in 2003.
The leading role in 'The Wild West' is self-evident for the man who was suddenly omnipresent in both letter and spirit: Pim Fortuyn. During his lifetime, Fortuyn was considered a charismatic Don Quixote. After his death, even his most critical observers compared him to Erasmus, Multatuli or Lord Byron. Was Pim Fortuyn indeed an un-Dutch phenomenon? Or was he, with all his contradictions and in all his exaltation, typically Dutch? Welcome to the Wild West.
