Description:
On 12 May 1985, Colombian adopted child Maya Undina Herrera celebrates her fifteenth birthday. A bizarre event on that day suddenly makes her realise: she has been thrown across the ocean to be a guardian angel in the Netherlands. She works very meticulously on fulfilling this calling, which is becoming ever greater and more comprehensive. Louis Ducrot, seven years younger than her, is a mentally handicapped boy who loses his father at a young age. He finds solace not with his mother but with Maya's uncle, the coffin maker Jacob Duivenvoorde. Black Eyes is the story of the chance encounters between Maya and Louis, and of the long periods in which they lose sight of each other. It is an epic about chance and will, about the grand gesture and the small defect, about saving and being saved, about forbidden love and the uselessness of reality. And it brings the Forgotten Street of the unforgettable Louis Paul Boon back to life...
