Description:
Calabrian Giorgio Bellusci dreams of restoring the family inn, destroyed long ago, to its former glory. When a stranger offers him "protection," Bellusci refuses to pay. His vines are destroyed and his sheep slaughtered, and when the stranger returns a week later, Bellusci kills him and goes to prison for eight years.
When Bellusci is released, his grandson Florian decides to help him build the inn. Florian calls in the help of his other grandfather, the famous photographer Hans Heumann. Fortune seems to smile on the family, until the construction is almost complete. Then it turns out that the murder in the past has not been forgotten by everyone. Fate strikes.
Between Two Seas is a masterful, subtle novel about the beauty of southern Italy: the nature, the cuisine, the smells, the sounds and the people, but also an indictment of the poor living conditions in Calabria and the permanent threat of the mafia. It deals with eternal themes such as family love, emigration, crime and loyalty in an unparalleled way.
Carmine Abate was born in Calabria. He lives in Trentino. Over the years he has won several literary prizes.
