Description:
It never happened, the second Den Uyl cabinet. It was considered the ultimate symbol of the ideals, expectations and failures of the political left in the Netherlands. In 1977, the left failed to convert the enormous election victory into government power, and from that moment on, the idealists of the past have increasingly found themselves on the defensive. The purple pragmatism of the nineties was the death knell for idealism. Jan Joost Lindner, former political commentator for the Volkskrant, has followed the developments closely for decades. In Het tweekabinet-Den Uyl he combines his own journalistic work with the memories of the participants at the time. The result is a lively mix of history and political portraits. Much of what remained behind closed doors is now becoming clear - not only in terms of the content of the political decision-making, but also when it comes to the personal relationships between them.
