Description:
One of the greatest and most influential aldermen in Dutch history was the social democrat Wibaut, a councillor in Amsterdam from 1907 and an alderman there from 1914. Florentius Wibaut (1859-1936) was the uncrowned viceroy of Amsterdam; his nickname was 'Wibaut the Mighty'.
Wibaut _ who had become rich as a timber merchant, remained a Marxist as a politician _ was alderman for Food Supply during the First World War, alderman for Housing until 1919 ('Who builds? Wibaut!') and from 1921 alderman for Finance and _ because as an entrepreneur he had come to know the wastes of capitalism _ municipal companies. But he was above all the man who made socialist municipal politics possible, by introducing progressive income taxes, and by making municipal companies efficient and profitable.
Wibaut. The Viceroy of Amsterdam is a portrait of the man whose influence in the city is still felt every day. It is also a fascinating portrait of Amsterdam then and now.
