Description:
The left is trapped between the two evils of paternalistic interference and the excessive desire for freedom. The anti-paternalism of the sixties and seventies has moved to the right and has taken a populist turn. This puts our libertarian and anti-authoritarian traditions under great pressure. After all, freedom does not automatically lead to liberalism, and emancipation does not automatically lead to good behavior. How do we prevent individualism from going too far in narcissism, greed and boorishness? How can freedom actually be made green and social?

The authors in Vrijzinnig paternalisme advocate an open and democratic paternalism that does not shy away from the moral debate about the good life. For example, Dick Pels and Marina Lacroix turn GroenLinks' position on prostitution on its head, Anna van Dijk wants more government activism regarding obesity and Erica Meijers and Cas Smithuijsen reinvent the ideal of elevation for the arts. Jos van der Lans tests the self-reliance of citizens, Femke Roosma makes a fresh plea for the basic income and Bas Eickhout and Casper Thomas argue for a liberal climate paternalism. It is time for a green and left-wing civilisation offensive.

Dick Pels is a sociologist and director of Bureau de Helling, the scientific bureau of GroenLinks. He has written several books, including his latest book Het volk bestaan niet. Anna van Dijk is a philosopher and worked at Bureau de Helling until recently.
