Description:
After the dramatic death of her lover, Loulou Speijer seeks distraction. She decides to search for the origin of her surname, which has roots in Suriname, where she has never been. During a short holiday on Texel, she visits the quay where in the old days the sailing ships left for the west. There she has a fleeting encounter with a man named Charles Speijer, who grew up in Paramaribo. In an Amsterdam archive, Loulou reconstructs the life of her great-grandfather, who financially supported legendary poets and artists. Without much passion, expectation or interest in the country and its people, she travels to Suriname in 1996, where she does not know a living soul. The family tree of her great-grandfather, which also mentions Jews, takes her to the `Joodensavanne' that flourished so much in the eighteenth century, of which now only a ruin remains. By chance she meets Charles Speijer again. After his departure, Loulou's dislike of fellow tourists proves fatal in the interior.
