Description:
The late-modern culture of the West raises problems that it seems unable to solve within its own framework. The emphasis on subjectivity that characterizes modernity "stimulated Western civilization to a grand and compelling process of renewal and change. The power of people has increased enormously as a result, as has the freedom of individual expression. But that process has also led to a loss of traditions that are important for giving meaning to experiences that transcend the individual and concern the finiteness of human existence. The concentration on the self Western culture, however successful, appears unable to truly unravel the secret of being human. The sadness remains.

The essays collected here provide an analysis of the impasses in which Western culture currently finds itself. Themes such as difference, alienation, style, creativity, meaning, irony and coincidence serve as starting points for these analyses. The search is always on for ways to get out of the impasse, but without falling back on overly traditional answers and while retaining the achievements of modern civilization. The thesis of this book is that only when the latter succeeds will there be talk of postmodernism in the true sense of the word.
