Description:
Five of the larger Dutch universities (Groningen, University of Amsterdam, Leiden, Delft and Utrecht) have collections that are comparable in size to those of all independent national museums put together, including Naturalis National Natural History Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
This book is an interuniversity and thematic introduction to that academic heritage. The introductory chapter tells about the history of universities as collectors. This is followed by the academic community, its workplaces and traditions; the special form of the cabinets and professors' collections; and the special collections of the university libraries. Furthermore, there is a history of university education based on the education collections. Then, in 'seeing, measuring and knowing', follow the beta instruments and the practice of research. Finally, art in science and the most recent academic heritage.
Each chapter is followed by examples and illustrations, described by administrators, curators and other experts.
Academic heritage has existed for a long time, only the term is relatively new. It is part of the working memory of dynamic science. The accessible institutions and museums of these five universities are listed at the back of this book. What can be seen there is the tip of the iceberg.
