Description:
Xavier Mellery plays a unique role in Belgian art at the end of the previous century and is considered one of the forerunners of symbolism. After spending a few years in Italy, thanks to winning the Prix de Rome, Mellery follows the fascination of symbolist writers such as Georges Rodenbach for the city of Bruges and its silently living beguines._x000D_
From 1880 onwards he made a series of drawings, entitled L'âme des choses (The soul of things), with which he gave a mystical meaning to everyday objects. His own house in Laeken (Brussels) also frequently served as an example in his atmospheric black and white drawings. In addition, this book depicts his characteristic decorative paintings, which he calls 'decoration synthéthique'._x000D_
This book presents for the first time a cross-section of the complete oeuvre of Xavier Mellery, since 1937. With many illustrations and interesting backgrounds, the life and work of this Belgian artist is revealed to a wide audience.
