Description:
A flamboyant blonde travels to the Arabian Gulf to investigate two million maids. During the week, she gathers her facts. She is accused of espionage and spat on because she is a woman. She spends her weekends partying, weddings, illegal bowling alleys and hiking in the desert, where she learns about money laundering, whores and drinking (Allah sees nothing when you close the curtains). She meets horny diplomats, suspicious scientists and a flirtatious boyfriend of Osama bin Laden.
She slowly puts the puzzle pieces together around the question of why so many women in these countries fall victim to exploitation and abuse. She gains insight into the political and financial structure, the many faces of the Sharia and the power of oppressed women. At the same time, her research leads to questions about her own standards and values. Where do they come from and are they actually that logical? Her worldview changes. In Far from my bed, Antoinette Vlieger shares with us the white and also jet-black pearls of her adventures on the Arabian Peninsula.
Antoinette Vlieger studied law, but also took numerous courses in cultural anthropology, economics, Arabic and political science of the Middle East. After working in corporate law for several years, she returned to the University of Amsterdam. In December 2011, she obtained her PhD for the research she describes in this book.
