Description:
Kat has a clear goal in life: to stand out as little as possible. If you don't do anything wrong, no one can think you're stupid. While others are fully immersed in student life, time seems to stand still for 19-year-old Kat: she collects stories without actually participating in life herself. She spends most of her time at Broodje John, a meeting place for lost souls. Until one day the charming Rif shows up in her life. The fact that he of all people wants to hang out with her is almost too good to be true. The friendship that develops gives Kat, despite the dark side, the feeling of belonging somewhere for the first time. For a moment it seems as if Rif is helping her come to terms with her past, but the dividing line between fact and fiction becomes increasingly erratic. What starts innocently gradually becomes sinister. And what story does her new friend actually carry with him? What does it mean to want to belong but fail? How does your past live on in the present? How sweet is revenge, really? And can damaged people perhaps glue each other together? Without Hands is a coming-of-age novel that moves, but also leaves you distraught. Ianthe Sahadat (1977) is a highly praised journalist. She works for de Volkskrant and stands out for her choice of subjects, courage and sense of social relevance. Sahadat previously won the important journalism prize, the Tegel for the best news story, with her revelations about the abuses at Hogeschool Inholland. Her debut Drijfhout was published in 2016.
