Description:
The colour of the walls, the type of floor covering, the wallpaper in the bedroom or the design of a sofa may seem unimportant, but the appearance and charisma of our homes and interiors are indeed of great importance to our happiness and well-being. In The Architecture of Happiness, Alain de Botton describes the wishes and requirements we have for our homes. He takes the reader on a journey through the aesthetics of Western and Eastern civilisations and asks questions such as: why do people and nations differ so much in taste? Can a beautiful environment make us happier? A good design and tasteful furnishings can indeed influence our feelings, despite our great differences. Happiness can also be found in a beautiful chair or a nice frame. Since the publication of Proeven van liefde (1994), Alain de Botton (1969) has quickly become one of the most beloved translated authors. The astute and intelligent way in which he expresses his original ideas has earned him a large fan base. To date, seven books by Alain de Botton have been published, including De troost van de filosofie (The Consolation of Philosophy) and Status Angst (Status Anxiety).
'The gift of Alain de Botton is that he forces us to think about how we live and, just as importantly, how we can change things.' Jeanette Winterson
'There is no doubt about it, philosophy is the new rock 'n' roll and Alain de Botton is its Tom Parker. (...) A joy to read!' John Banville, The Irish Times
De Botton emerges as a funny, engaging, erudite and disarmingly honest person.' Harriet Lane, The Observer
