Description:
'A planning mistake' – Amsterdam-Noord was called this name soon after the first residential areas were built in the 1920s. Nevertheless, this 'mistake' was deliberately and necessarily magnified until today. In the meantime, a medium-sized municipality has emerged on the other side of the IJ, which, with the development of the northern bank of the IJ and the construction of the North-South metro line, is increasingly becoming a real part of Amsterdam. Jan Donkers (1943) was born in this 'Siberia of Amsterdam'. In So close to Amsterdam – a series of travel reports about the city of his youth – he looks back not only with resentment but also with love. This illustrated edition includes photographs by Kors van Bennekom (1933), who has frequently captured city life in Amsterdam-Noord over the past half century. An important part of his work consists of the photographs in which he captured his family during their daily life in Noord; a selection of these photographs is included in a separate, newly written chapter.
