Description:
Fire and Darkness by Sinclair McKay is a bloodcurdling reconstruction of the bombing of Dresden. On 13 February 1945, at a quarter to ten in the evening, 244 British bombers took off towards the German city. It was the beginning of one of the most destructive bombings of the Second World War. The city was completely destroyed. In the merciless sea of fire that night and morning, a total of 25,000 people would die. McKay also describes life in Dresden before and after the attack. His great strength is that he tells the story from multiple perspectives: first and foremost from the perspective of the Dresdeners themselves, but he also lets a number of German officers stationed in Dresden have their say, and the British, of course. In one night, one of the most beautiful cities in Germany was completely destroyed. And that while the war was already coming to an end. Fire and Darkness is a monumental book. The effect on the reader lingers for a long time.
