Description:
A rock-solid debut in the tradition of Martinus Nijhoff. Edwin Fagel's lines of poetry mainly describe everyday situations in unadorned language - an old man searches for his cigarettes but finds his handkerchief; men in black stand on the zebra crossing waiting for the tram to pass. But with his bare, unemphatic lines, Fagel exposes the threat that lurks behind the everyday. Fagel does not shy away from major concepts such as religion, death, fear, love and intimacy; they are omnipresent in the domestic scenes. Death is always close by, also for lovers, clowns and writers. Fagel makes this tangible with penetrating and sometimes dark images, culminating in a series of prayers to an absent person, whoever or whatever he or she may be.
