Description:
Lessons from Long-Term Successful Companies
Industries are sometimes dominated by one market leader for years. Carol Velthuis calls these long-term successful companies "summer players", referring to the natural seasonal cycle of each company. The big question is how you can stay in the summer of that cycle as long as possible as a company.
Velthuis analyzed 500 large companies in all their stages. Fifteen emerged that are in an exceptionally long summer: including Amazon, Apple, Canon, Caterpillar, Cisco, Hewlett Packard, Ikea and Walt Disney. These summer players have a number of striking characteristics in common. For example, they have a long-term view, a sharp customer focus, management that is close to the shop floor, they excel in quality and cost control, and they have strong shared values that have been largely lacking in many companies, for example in the financial sector in recent years.
This book is a compelling and accessible account of the most extraordinary business stories and offers lessons that are instructive and actionable for any company.
