VIKTOR MANN
THERE WERE FIVE OF US
The history of the Mann family, to which the two world-famous writers Heinrich and Thomas Mann belong, was written down by their youngest brother Viktor. This book, first published in 1949, is still remarkable as a document of the European, cosmopolitan spirit that characterised Germany during the first half of the twentieth century.
Viktor Mann tells numerous, hitherto unknown facts about the lives of the brothers Heinrich and Thomas Mann and about the origins of their works. The characters from their great novels are also examined. The many illustrations - including portraits of the Mann family and drawings made by Heinrich and Thomas - make this edition a special book.
Viktor Mann is the brother of the world-famous writers Thomas and Heinrich Mann. We Were Five are the memoirs of the youngest son of the family, which has gone down in literary history as the 'Buddenbrooks'.
'More than worth reading.' JAN BLOKKER IN THE VOLKSKRANT
'This hefty book [...] is a sight to behold.' DE GROENE AMSTERDAMMER
'We Were Five by Viktor Mann is an endearing but at the same time lucid and honest piece of writing.' ERWIN MORTIER IN DE MORGEN
