Description:
Ten-year-old Kate Meaney spends most of her time at the Green Oaks shopping mall, where she keeps a close eye on shoppers like a young detective. Inspired by her favorite book How to Become a Detective, which she received from her father shortly before he died, she writes down every suspicious detail about the shoppers in her notebook.
Twenty years later, a girl carrying a notebook and a toy monkey appears in front of one of Green Oaks’ security cameras, a scene that evokes memories of the unsolved disappearance of young detective Kate Meaney in the 1980s. Kurt, a sleep-deprived security guard, and Lisa, a disillusioned music store manager, follow the girl through the center’s endless corridors—a welcome escape from consuming customers and jaded coworkers.
Catherine O'Flynn (1970) grew up as the youngest of a large family in Birmingham, where her parents owned a sweet shop. Her debut novel What Is Lost received rave reviews in England, partly because of its pointed observations of the emptiness of modern life.
