Description:
Intriguing novel in which the history of the passenger ship Willem Ruys (later Achille Lauro) and the life of the young Freya come together.
New Zealand, 1967. In the port city of Wellington, young Freya embarks on the Achille Lauro with her husband Herman and their son Volkert. Herman hopes that Freya will quickly forget her lover - a kiwi - once she returns to the Netherlands. But during the journey, which almost ends in a drama due to the threatened closure of the Suez Canal, Herman realizes that he has lost his wife for good. He decides to return to New Zealand with his son.
Being with her lover does not bring Freya the life she had hoped for. When the relationship ends, she longs for the Big Blue Ship where she spent her last hours with her son. The ship brings her closer to her memories of her youth, of the Japanese camp where she was interned with her mother and of her father, who only rejoined them six years after the surrender of the Netherlands to Japan. Journey after journey, it becomes clearer why Freya did not succeed in leading the grand and exciting life she dreamed of in her youth.
