Description:
The Second World War is central to part two of the monumental biography of Queen Wilhelmina. In the five years of her exile in England, she experienced the darkest and most beautiful hours of her long reign. In London, she was the voice of the free and militant Netherlands, the mother of the Englandvaarders, but also the champion of a political renewal drive that brought her into fierce conflict with the cabinet.
Wilhelmina reported on these eventful years in numerous letters to Princess Juliana in Canada. These letters are published here for the first time, alongside other pieces from her personal archive to which Cees Fasseur was the first to have unlimited access.
The period between the world wars also comes to life. Wilhelmina's search for a suitable marriage partner for her daughter, Prince Hendrik's financial worries, her travels and political involvements are told in a compelling way. The picture of this queen and her time is sketched clearly, profoundly, in detail and at the same time panoramically.
