Description:
In March 2003, the war in Iraq begins. After only a few weeks, the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein is over. But now, five years later, there is still no security in Iraq. A million Iraqis have died, millions are on the run and there is little hope for a peaceful future.

Nova reporter Tom Kleijn made his first trip to Iraq in 2002. Saddam's regime was still completely intact, but war was looming in the distance. In 2008, when Kleijn was there for the tenth time, the country was on fire: despite reports that things were finally improving, hundreds of people were dying every week. Journalists and aid workers no longer dared to enter the country.

Kleijn spoke to hundreds of Iraqis. From Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, the face of the regime, to soldiers in the Iraqi army. From the first democratically elected president of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, to the rebels in Fallujah. He also spoke to American soldiers, traveled to the south, where Dutch soldiers had to bring peace and security, and was the first to investigate the deadly shooting incident with Marine Eric O.

In this book he tells vividly and with great attention to detail about his work under increasingly extreme circumstances - about the threats, the bribes, the disruption, and about the daily lives of ordinary Iraqis.
