Description:
He has been a professor of Medical Sociology for many years and then one day he is diagnosed with colon cancer. After the tremendous emotional shock he undergoes the medical treatment appropriate to the condition. During the medical process he realizes to his amazement that things are happening that he had never read about in the professional literature before. This happened to Gerhard Nijhof, professor of Medical Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. When he realized this he started keeping a notebook during his illness and rehabilitation about what happened to him, what he observed and where it did not match his knowledge of his professional literature. This continuous connection of an observation or a personal experience with a distant scientifically worded theme makes this book a compelling account of the 'everyday' life of a sick person. Recommended for everyone who works in health care, those who have to deal with long-term (seriously) sick people in their immediate environment and for those interested in medical sociology. Gerhard Nijhof is professor of Medical Sociology at the University of Amsterdam.
