Description:
Van Ree, as he himself writes, ex-Maoist and currently lecturer at the European Studies program of the University of Amsterdam, describes the history of communism in almost all countries of the world. Also what came before, in particular the French Revolution. Then Marx/Engels, the Russian and Chinese revolutions, the power grabs after the Second World War, the struggle with Mao, Tito and others, the victories in Southeast Asia and the decline after 1985.
It has become a total picture, which for a large number of countries also became (parts of) the history of the country. One of the main questions of the book, 'why did it have such an attraction?', has been partly answered. For the ordinary citizens and farmers it becomes clear in the afterword, namely 'many millions were killed'. Intimidation and terror, therefore. But why so many intellectuals, artists and 'respectable' politicians supported or appreciated communism (the author for example) is not made clear here.
