Description:
When award-winning photographer Lana Slezic set out to report on Afghanistan in March 2004, she had no idea that she would be staying for two years. At the time, she had assumed that the living conditions of Afghan women and girls had improved significantly since the fall of the Taliban regime. However, she soon discovered that life for Afghan women was very different from what she had expected, and decided to stay to document their stories. With the help of a young Afghan woman who became her friend and interpreter, Slezic photographed women across the country. In towns and villages, over endless amounts of tea, she saw that women were still severely oppressed, with forced marriages, domestic violence, honor killings and an intolerable lack of freedom commonplace. To this day, many women are still not allowed to leave their homes or go to school, and the burqa remains a common sight on the dusty streets of the war-torn country.
