Description:
SANDY SOIL

Thomas de Soet, journalist, is burdened by a happy childhood. Because of this unusual handicap, an excess of inherited warmth, he is inclined to invade the lives of others with an almost unbearable urge for meaning, comfort and redemption. This has made him lonely. Actress Emma Zoelmond lost her mother as a child. Searching for something to hold on to, she has banished the memory, She only allows others in as comfort 111 a life that she has to invent anew every day on stage.

The shock of their meeting promises to bring a spectacular balance. Don't they complement each other perfectly? But Thomas imposes a past on Emma that she does not recognize, and she robs him of his beautiful role. In their attempts to reach each other, Emma becomes increasingly disoriented. Thomas increasingly flees into his grandfather's diary. He manages to merge the difficult to read notes into a gripping story about disillusionment, despair and a love that blossoms miraculously from the mud in the trenches of the First World War. His grandfather's story seems to offer a model of life that is as simple as it is harmonious. Or is it more of a surrogate? Perhaps Thomas and Emma are simply doomed by their past in Hilversum, that fragile city built on sandy soil. Where nothing can stick.
