Description:
CHRISTA HEIN A WOMAN FROM RIGA
RIGA, EARLY THIS CENTURY. Sophie Berkholz works as a math teacher at a technical college and has one great passion: photography. But her family mercilessly pressures her to do what women are expected to do. She quits her job, puts away her camera, marries, has a daughter - and is unhappy.
When her husband, the Danish naval engineer Albert Utzon, is sent to Port Arthur by the Tsar on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, he asks Sophie to leave her daughter in Riga and travel after him. Sophie grabs her camera and boards the train to China. The long and adventurous journey that follows becomes the beginning of a new life for her.
A Woman from Riga is a colorful and sensual novel about an enterprising young woman and her struggle to break free from the conventions of her time. Christa Hein succeeds in creating a vivid and convincing picture of a woman's life against the background of the darkest period in Russian history: the Russo-Japanese War, the Revolution and the First World War.
