Description:
The ongoing individualisation has at least two sides: on the one hand it is characterised by the rise of the Walkman ego, which is connected to a global consumer culture and is under constant pressure to compete and perform; on the other hand it brings with it the liberation from the tea-cosy culture, within which the identity of individuals was determined by the compelling norms and values of an internalised philosophy of life or political ideology. Building on the communication-theoretical perspective of Jürgen Habermas and on postmodern and feminist insights, Kunneman sketches the contours of postmodern individuality on the basis of three themes: progress, rationality and normative professionalism. He shows that the space that has been freed up by the crumbling of the tea-cosy culture offers the possibility for new, radical articulations of notions such as equality, communicative openness and difference.
