Description:
This new approach to medicine does not immediately lead to significant progress in the treatment of patients. For this reason, twentieth-century medicine increasingly resorts to statistical-epidemiological techniques. For example, in order to demonstrate therapeutic effectiveness, it is now virtually impossible to do without an experiment in which the effect in a group of patients is compared with the effect in a control group. The question arises as to how the statistical results of these techniques relate to the conviction of scientific medicine that phenomena are determined by laws. The two approaches do not seem to fit together well, which means that medical-scientific knowledge leaves considerable room for different interpretations. The author's (historical) analysis sheds new light on current discussions about policymaking in specific medical problems.
