Description:
Exactly twenty years ago, employers and employees concluded the Wassenaar Agreement, which marked the beginning of the Dutch miracle and a restored confidence in the consultation economy. Despite all domestic achievements and foreign appreciation, this is not a quiet possession. For outsiders, the 'polder model' is seen as undemocratic, for politicians as a stubborn nuisance, and for those involved sometimes unfathomable. The poor spots are well-known: little innovation, little attention for the quality of work, care or education, waiting lists, protracted dossiers such as the WAO. Does this mean the bankruptcy of the polder model? Away from consultation? More politics as the late Fortuyn believed, more Zalm's market, or perhaps Balkenende's midfield? Or has power long since flowed to Europe and should solutions be sought in Brussels, or even outside Europe? Is it time for a new Wassenaar Agreement? The problems, dilemmas and possibilities are listed in six chapters.
